Squadron History

631 Sentinel Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron held its first training night on 5 November, 1956, with the Scarborough Eglinton Lions Club as its community sponsor. Parades were held at the old Scarborough Police Building at 32 Civic Road, with an enrollment of approximately 50 young men between the ages of 14 and 19.

In 1958, with the continued support of the Scarborough Recreation and Parks Department, the Squadron moved to 24 Civic Road. With the help of the parents and cadets, as well as the members of the newly formed Scarborough Sea Cadet Corps, the building was refurbished. 631 Sentinel Squadron opened branches at Winston Churchill Collegiate and Cedarbrae Collegiate.

In 1964, the Squadron started the renovation of its new home, a former car dealership; it was called the Mid-Scarborough Youth Centre. Today the Don Montgomery Community Centre stands on this same property.

After Parliament amended the National Defense Act to allow the enrollment of female cadets, 631 Sentinel Squadron was one of the first units to actively encourage recruitment and enrollment of young women.

In 1996, 631 Sentinel Squadron won the Group of the Year Award for the City of Scarborough. In 2010, 631 Sentinel Squadron was voted the best Squadron in Ontario by the OPC (Ontario Provincial Committee) at the fall AGM.

During 631 Sentinel Squadron’s 60+ years of service over 155 cadets have earned their wings learning to fly and countless cadets have continued on choosing careers in the Canadian Forces and the aviation industry.
